Liveness check

What is a liveness check?

A liveness check is a biometric security step used to confirm that a real, live person is present during a digital identity verification process, rather than a photo, video, or deepfake. It is a key component of secure, remote identification and is often required for regulatory compliance in the EU, particularly under eIDAS, GDPR, and AML5 frameworks.

Why liveness checks matter

A liveness check uses biometric technology, such as facial recognition or movement tracking, to determine whether the individual being verified is physically present at the time of the verification.

It typically works by prompting users to perform a brief action (like blinking, turning their head, or smiling) while recording a short video or analyzing facial features in real time. More advanced passive liveness detection can confirm presence without requiring any user action, making the process more seamless and user-friendly.

Liveness checks are crucial for preventing identity fraud, particularly in remote onboarding scenarios where criminals might try to trick systems using printed photos, screenshots, or synthetic media. They help ensure that the person submitting their ID is not only the legitimate owner of the document but also physically present and engaged in the process. As such, liveness detection plays a critical role in trust services, qualified electronic signatures (QES), and KYC/AML compliance procedures.

By combining liveness checks with ID document authentication and biometric matching, providers like Evrotrust offer a fully compliant and secure way to verify identities remotely, enabling seamless digital onboarding with strong legal guarantees.
