What is an eTimestamp?
Electronic timestamps are a nonrepudiation service that certifies electronic data content at the time of stamp issuance. You can apply it to documents and data when you need legal proof of their content and condition at a given instance of time.
For example, think of a legal dispute over a contract. If a set of timestamped signed documents is amended later and the disputing party claims to only recognize the changed version, the timestamp on the original agreement certifies that the disputing party signed the previous version of the document.
What’s the difference between electronic and traditional timestamps?
The electronic timestamp certificate protects documents against unauthorized changes. If someone attempts to alter the data in the document, the eTimestamp won’t apply anymore.
Electronic timestamps certify the document with a hash function using robust cybersecurity technology. It is impossible to make changes to the document after the timestamp is issued and preserve it at the same time. Thus, eTimestamps are a more reliable method for protecting your records.
Traditional timestamps may be a written or printed date and time, for example. As such, they are easier to forge and manipulate, making them insufficiently secure.
If your organization needs to protect the official versions of documents and defend their validity in court, a qualified electronic timestamp is your best option.
How can I tell if the timestamp authority is trustworthy?
The timestamping authority matters. Evrotrust offers a legally valid timestamp service recognized under the eIDAS regulation. As a qualified trust service provider, we are authorized to provide an eTimestamp solution that is official and trustworthy.
Can you timestamp just any electronic document?
Yes, you can timestamp anything. It makes no difference what kind of document or file you need to timestamp.
Can eTimestamps be tampered with?
No, they cannot. Making any changes to the document or file will void the timestamp. It will be impossible to present an altered document and claim the timestamp on a previous version of it still applies.
In what cases is an eTimestamp necessary?
Electronic timestamps are useful when you want to certify the contents or existence of a document at a specific point in time. For instance, they are suitable for contracts, invoices, tax documents or other reports when you want to have an official record of the specific date and time they are created or updated last.
